The Palouse, Washington

Palouse Sunset - West

Just like the previous photo, this was shot from high atop Steptoe Butte, but this one is looking (obviously) due west right into the sunset. The little hamlet below is the town of Steptoe and the vast expanse of rolling hills is a portion of the region known as "The Palouse". A richly agricultural area predominantly covered in wheat fields.

I've shot this scene many times, and its always different which is why I keep coming back year after year, over and over again. It never disappoints, that's for certain! Being a resident of western Washington I am accustomed to shooting dramatic sunset skies like this over water with equally dramatic reflections in bodies of water. It was kind of weird for me to see not much of the sky being reflected from the surface. I guess I'm just spoiled by living around so much water every where! Nevertheless, it was a thrill to photograph this highly colorful sunset over top such an incredible landscape!
