Pilot House of the Stuart J. Cort

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan

I mentioned earlier that we went through the Sault locks along with the Stuart J. Cort. The Stuart J. Cort, was the first 1000 footer on the Great Lakes. Now there are 13. The Cort is the only thousand footer with her pilot house forward.

The Cort started out as Hull1173, known (unofficially) as "Stubby". Stubby was built in 1970 in Mississippi. The bow and stern sections of the Cort were joined together. Stubby was 182 feet long and 75 feet wide. She sailed up from Mississippi, and came through the St. Lawrence Seaway to Erie, Pennsylvania. She was cut apart on the "cut here" instructions that were painted on the hull and the two ends were fastened to an 818 foot mid-body. She was re-named the Stuart J. Cort, and made her maiden voyage in 1972.

This is a nice image of the Cort and pilot house...
My grand parents lived in the Soo and I remember going to the locks and watching the varies ships locked through from one level to another...

Interesting approach to ship building and what a size for inland waters.
Good shot and detail

Friends from Michagan have told us about this area.
Sounds like a much more beautiful and photogenic area than I imagined. Your images certainly bear that out, Cindy.

Hi Cindy, For a shiplover and modeler from childhood,
this is really most interesting. Time was when l always associated
the bridge superstructure (pilot house)on Great Lakers as being
well forward up at the bow.
Apparently for some years now, they have gone back to more conventional designs.
Thanks for posting these 3 interesting pictures.

Thank you, Terry.
BTW, I found this photo of Stubby by Roger LeLievre, taken as Stubby was en route from Mississippi to Erie, PA.

Looks like she has stayed together, nicely. Interesting history. Fascinating image, Cindy.
