Sand Point Lighthouse

Escanaba, Michigan

This is the last of the lighthouses that we visited on our trip through Upper Michigan. Sand Point Lighthouse is located in Escanaba, Michigan. This lighthouse was built in 1867. It operated from 1868 to 1939. It was originally right on the waters edge, but dredging and filling over the years has set it back from the water. Escanaba was a busy harbor with traffic of schooners, passenger steamers and whalebacks. Iron ore was carried out from several ore docks and lumber from sawmills. Passengers arrived from the south.
The weather was dreary, windy, cold and unsettled on this stop of our trip.

On my trips to the "upper" I remember the weather was always unpredictable along the Lakes.
Nice image of this historic Lighthouse...
