Raspberry Island Lighthouse.jpg

Raspberry Island, Apostle Islands, WI

We took a boat out to Raspberry Island, one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. I took this shot as we were leaving... the boat was really bouncing...thank goodness for OIS. This is a double-house lighthouse. It is now unmanned. It was built in the 1840's as a single lighthouse, but the desolate and dangerous conditions led to the re-model and addition of a second light-keeper and quarters in about 1906. The oil for the light was originally kept in the basement of the house. Later the brick building was added to house the oil and later the lift equipment used to bring supplies up from the dock. There are 72 steps from the dock. The original light-keepers had a horse that was housed in the small white barn that is partially visible behind the brick building.

There is something about these red roofed buildings on the landscape, they just seem to pop out at you.
A gorgeous shot, so well kept..

This is most interesting Cindy, and well photographed from a rolling boat.
l've never seen one built into a house like this. A true light-house.
Your story of its history adds so much to the interest of your photo

It does look to be in remarkable condition. Nicely photographed and very sharp for hand-held from a moving boat.

A lovely lighthouse - so different from any in UK and so well kept.
I guess its the same all over that most are run remotely these days.
They can make good vacation places
