Spicebush Swallowtail Showing Its Beauty

Wisconsin

The Spicebush Swallowtail is sometimes called the Greenclouded Swallowtail because the male has a pronounce greenish tone to the hindwing. This is a female, because it has the blueish hindwing. All have the red-orange spot on the upper margin of the hindwing.
The larvae feed on Spicebush, Sassafras, Sweet Bay and Prickly Ash. These Swallowtails frequent low, damp woods and are less frequently seen in the open dry areas. They are active flyers and seldom alight. They are a challenge to photograph because of their activity and the dark color. :-}
