Thanks all. Pat is right - it is a barred owl; I'll post a closer image tonight. Michael, mostly I was thinking - why don't I have a longer lens with me. I was on my way to a meeting and had a little time so I was cruising some back roads. Not anticipating doing any serious photography I had thrown a camera and a couple of lenses in a bag but left the rest of the kit at home.

I think Pat nailed the ID. As I look at it, my original
suggestion is Wrong!

A beautiful shot, I like the square crop and composition of this shot.

This is a wonderfully sharp photo of the owl. You used DOF to good advantage and got the focus perfect. Looks like the owl is just posing for you.

A fine shot of the owl in its habitat!

Quite a charming fellow...
A beautiful example, and very well imaged.
If you are like me, (not wishing that on anyone) you were saying,"why didn't I buy the 400!"

I'm thinking this might be a short-eared owl, since they do hunt in the
daytime. I really like this, Steve. It shows such a typical perch and a
wonderful wooded background.

I don't think that you need to get close, It's a great image and scene. The Evergreens in the background really make this photp. Well Done!

What a wonderful photograph Steve.
Fascinating and highly specialised birds.
Do you know what type of owl it is ?

Great find... he looks bored, but I'm sure that
is not the case. Were you able to get closer?
