Black Swallowtail

Keeping with the butterfly theme of the last few days, I thought I would post this Black Female Swallowtail from my 2006 archive. If you are interested, more from my butterfly garden show the caterpillar, chrysalis and emerging swallowtail. http://www.pbase.com/cindyflood/swallowtails

In 2006, I wrote: "This is the second new Swallowtail Butterfly to emerge from my butterfly garden. I watched it emerge from the chrysalis all crinkled up. It spent quite a bit of time waiting for it's wings to harden. When it finally took flight, it never stopped until it was out of sight. "

Tremendous shot, Cindy.
I don't know what to add here that hasn't been said, but I'm glad I am not competing with this shot...

Thank you for the nice comments.
Pat, I have just planted butterfly friendly plants in my butterfly garden. In the instance of this butterfly, the mother laid her eggs on my dill plant. The caterpillars ate it to the ground while they were growing. They used my deck to build their chrysalises on. I have butterfly bush, asters, milk weed plant, coreopsis, cone flowers and black eyed susans among other plants. Swallowtails love parsley and dill and Monarchs love the milk weed and Asters. Red Admirals like the Butterfly bush and Asters. I've noticed that butteflies flock to the zinnias at the park.

wow this is super and a lot fancier in color than most Black Swallowtail. I have never gotten a butterfly kit but usually find them in the fields or as the case is a neighbor has a butterfly bush.. I used to have one.. The red Admiral I read is territorial so it might stay around... I think I saw mine again but I was unable to get the camera right away. wonderful clarity and color here and a great composition.
