Quabbin is the largest reservoir of untreated drinking water in the United States. The name, Quabbin, derives from the language of the original inhabitants, the Nipmuc Indians, and means "Meeting of the waters". It refers to the confluence of three rivers, the East, Center, and West branches of the Swift River within the area known as the Swift River Valley.


In 1937,the rivers were dammed below their confluence, and seven years later, 1944, the valley was fully inundated creating the massive 18 mile long, 412 billion gal. reservoir known today as Quabbin. For more Quabbin history, click on this link: http://www.the-woodsman.com.
