Carnegie Library

Hoople, ND

Andrew Carnegie donated many libaries. Like the man himself, Carnegie's libraries were a mixture of sincere generosity and naked self-interest.

Carnegie seems to have read around about as much as Washington slept around. But I guess that if it provides people with both reason and means to read more, self-interest may not be such a bad thing. What was it that was popular during the Regan era -- enlightened self-interest?
