The U.S population of ospreys is the heaviest along the East Coast. About 50 percent of all U.S ospreys nest within foraging distance of the Atlantic seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico. Florida holds 20 percent as does Maine. A second, smaller somewhat isolated U.S population exists in northern Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. An estimated 650 breeding pairs are thought to exist in this region.
