Sandhill colts are hard to raise. They need to see adult sandhills so they know their species. They need to be with other colts, but not together, they fight with each other. So there are a lot of cages for each one at the Feather, but not together.
They start out in the house under lights during the day and on heating pads at night.
They have to learn to eat and drink on their own. We use a hand puppet crane to feed them and get them to drink water. It is a long process.
