This is in response to the guest comment about being transported in bags.

First of all these are not 1-2 week old chicks, which are I agree all stomach, feet and mouth. These birds are 5-1/2 weeks old and are just about completly feathered. Their flights are in the blood and a pail would certainly break those feathers. A cotton bag keeps them quiet, wings together to the body and less chance of breakage. They are not upside down, we know better. We have been doing banding for over 25 years now. Not just ospreys.

But hey thanks for the comment.

Young raptors should not be transported in bags. They are mostly gut, feet and mouth. If they are upside down, or being held in that position for any amount of time they will suffocate, collapse air sacs and hemorage thru nares, mouth and ears. Use a pail!!!
