Eagle release May 2009

On May 9, 2009 we received an adult bald eagle from the Weyauwega area with a left wrist injury. The wing at the wrist was twisted backwards and she could not fly. She was taken to the vets in New London the next day and was x-rayed. She did not have any broken bones but was not at a good weight. We put her in a restricted cage where she could just rest and eat for one week. Then we put her in an 80 foot flight and the next day we decided to release her. She was flying good and was trying to get loose all the time. Rather than risk feather damage we took her back where she came from and released her. It was the right move. After she was in the air for some 40 seconds a second eagle came and they circled and flew together and left us earthbound.

It took a lot of people to get her back to release. First my neighbor a great volunteer and friend Don Baumgartner got her into the hospital cage in the basement the first night. Then I tapped all the cops I know and got a state trooper, Jim Binder to take her to the vets. Our vet Jim Ziegler owns the Wolf River Vet Clinic here in New London. Jim does all our wild work for us.
Then it was back to Don when it came time to put her in a large fight cage. She was banded on Sunday May 17 and taken back to where she was found. Tim Cullen and his son Wes, who found the bird, were on hand for the release.

One person put it quite simple--"It takes a village"
