This regular visitor at our back yard fountain was almost fully molted to first basic (resembling adult) plumage for this photo; note the solid dark gray crown, and almost all the back, wing, and tail feathers dark gray, with only remaining juvenile tail feather and three secondaries. For a sequence of shots showing the progress of the bird's molt from mid-June, see http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/coopers_fountain . The bluish tinge to the gray feathers and the relatively bright rufous of the barred underparts suggest that this bird is a male.
