Cooper's Hawk, juvenile

My back yard, Stanford campus

The yellow-orange eye and the worn feathers mean that the bird is a year old, approaching the end of its first cycle. Barbara spotted this handsome hawk perched at our back yard fountain, where Cooper's have occasionally visited in the past. The same bird returned the next day around noon, see http://www.pbase.com/image/144123165 , and then regularly through the summer as it molted to adult (first basic) plumage, see http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/coopers_fountain .
