Steller's Jay

Yard, Stanford campus

This bird seems to be the mate of the long-surviving Steller's Jay with the deformed bill which I've photographed in my yard; see http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/stellers_deformed . They showed up together this morning, and on most of its previous visits over the last year plus, the handicapped bird has been closely accompanied by a conspecific with a normal bill. I'm guessing this is a mate: according to Birds of North America Online, Steller's Jay "males and females form apparently monogamous, long-term pair bonds."

A perfect specimen for the photo collection, again well captured.
