WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK

Chisholm Park

Okay, I was sitting quietly at the park trying to have lunch when this yellow crowned night heron flew down, grabbed a baby duck, stabbed it and then proceeded to eat it. I caught most of it and since I was having chicken, my appetite basically flew out the window. I'd never seen this happen before. Usually, they go for the crawfish but this one decided to go for a little baby duck. I was hoping he'd choke on it but he did manage to get it down. It took quite a while. Couldn't take any more shots after this. I had to share. Sorry if this upsets anyone but I guess this is the way nature works. Survival of the fittest.

The Momma Duck had a fit but couldn't save her baby. I sure hope he doesn't pick on any others!

Goodness me...what a sight and astounding captures! Yes, very sad...I don't think I could have watched, but am a bit of a coward about such things.......I would think the duckling knew nothing about it though, thankfully...nature, as you say!

sad, but natural, better than a fishing hook in a bill, or plastic can holder wrapped around its neck

Outstanding series. Mother nature can be harsh... But then we're the biggest predator of them all...

Awe, poor thing! I can't believe that he ate the whole thing, how sad.
Excellent series of images depicting the events as they unfolded.
