I am fortunate enough to live in Ficksburg, a small Free State town in the heart of South Africa. With its sandstone cliffs on the neighbouring farms and beautiful old sandstone buildings, it is a lovely old town with much to record visually. Across the river, is Lesotho, a mountain kingdom with rural areas that are almost inaccessible, traversed by pony and donkey and populated by hardy folk who live in stone huts and tend their sheep and goats on remote mountain slopes overlooking breathtaking views. We have an amazing working farm in the area; Sandstone Estates, which has a huge collection of antique tractors and steam engines all perfectly restored. They have various shows and festivals each year where the public can ride on the trains and enjoy looking at all the equipment. Photographers come from all over the world to photograph the early morning steam runs at these shows and when the trains are combined with the cosmos crop, the photographic opportunities are superb. I have been hooked by the joy of being able to manipulate my images digitally so, when I am not out taking photographs, I am glued to my computer, learning, editing and creating.
