Of all the places I staid in Costa Rica, Rancho Naturalista was my longest stay at nine days, and still it wasn't nearly long enough. The lodge is located about 2 1/2 hours drive southeast of San Jose at just over 900 metres (3000 feet) on the Caribbean slope. Because it was the smallest of the lodges, one quickly gets to know everyone and you feel like you are part of a big family. With bird feeding stations just outside the open air dining area, and hummingbird feeders seemingly everywhere, one never leaves their binoculars or camera behind. And to top it all off, and the thing that really sold me on this place, they have a moth light that they turn on at night. But visit the moth gallery for more information on that.
