Etosha National Park encompasses Etosha Pan, which is an old, dried-out lake bed, and the surrounding habitat. The pan is huge, 120 km long and 55 wide at its widest point. Some areas of the pan may have water in them during the rainy season, and there are numerous waterholes, some of which will retain water all year round. We spent three days in the area, one at Namutoni at the eastern end of the pan, and two at Okaukuejo at the western end. Unfortunately we were there during the rainy season, and as a result there were many waterholes for the mammals to use and there were few mammals at the ones that were accessible from the roads. Nonetheless we did see a good variety of mammals and lots of birds.
