I have just recently (Oct 25, 2009) moved from Edmonton Alberta to Comox B.C. My collection of B.C. insect images is still quite small, but is gradually growing and is large enough to be worth creating sub-galleries. My hope is that, as the galleries grow, more and more people will find these images useful in identifying insects and spiders that they might find and are curious about.
I do not claim to be an expert on all insects and spiders, in fact, with over one million known species of insects it is impossible for any one person to be so. Although I have had help from many people more knowledgeable than I in identifying certain groups, I have still put names to many of the species. For this reason there may be errors, and there are certainly cases where I have not been able to get a particular individual to the species or even genus level. If anyone can help with this, their help would be much appreciated.
Although the gallery does cover all of British Columbia, most of the photos were taken on Vancouver Island where I live. A precise location for each photo can be found in small print underneath the photo.
Hi there, so I've been surfing around the net trying to identify an insect I encountered while visiting Hornby Island this summer. I took photos of it on July 23. This single winged insect was aprox 2 inches long and looked like a cross between a giant bumblebee and it's abdomen looked like a cockroach. It has bright yellow shoulder pads. If you'd like to take a shot at identifying it I can send you two pictures. I also have a little bit of HD video too of it scurrying about on the ground.
