AFRICAN PLANTS

There are certain plants that can capture the imagination of even a non-botanist when one thinks of Africa. The most obvious is the Baobab tree, or Monkey Bread Tree with its huge, swollen looking trunk and branches that look more like roots, giving it another name, the Upside-down tree. A second plant is Welwitschia mirabilis, a very bizarre "tree" found in the Namib Desert that can live for over 1000 and perhaps as long as 2000 years. The biggest known plant is 1.4 m tall and over 4 m across. The plant consists of a woody stem and two leaves that split and continue to grow throughout the life of the plant, forming a basal whorl. The Namib Desert has many other unusual plants, a few of which are found in this gallery. Hopefully, in time, I will be able to put names to all of them.
