AFRICAN PEOPLE AND PLACES

Although these photographs were taken in various places throughout our trip, there were two locations in particular that stood out, and were the locations of the majority of the photographs. The first was Camp N'Kwazi near Rundu, and the nearby village of Mayana. Like so many villages in Africa, Mayana is very poor and as yet does not get sufficient financial support from the government to even properly support the school. The good people at Camp N'Kwazi have stepped up and organized activities such as their entertainment evening, the riverboat tours and the school and village walks where the proceeds go directly to the village.

The second was a Himba village near Kamanjab. This was a small village of about 20 people, consisting of only 3 men as permanent residents and the rest being women and children. Although the village was on private land, and very close to a farmhouse which is very modern, the Himba had elected to continue their traditional lifestyle. The women dye their skin red by using a paste made from butter fat and crushed stones gathered from a nearby mountain. These Himba are not hunters, but rather gatherers, gleaning what they can from the desert. As well they do keep goats and grow some crops such as maize. They are also in the process of learning cattle husbandry. What money they need is aquired fron the sale of hand-made jewelry and wood carvings. These were a truly beautiful people who welcomed us into their village with grace and dignity.
