Thornlands, QLD

Comet Machholz on Dec 12.48 UT, 2004, 11 x 3 minute ISO400 exposures with modded 300D + 100mm f2.8 lens (operating at f2.8). This view is nearly 13 degrees high and shows a long faint ion tail and short dust tail. Temperature was 26 C (80 F), humid but otherwise quite clear (Bortle 4.5 sky). Comet was easily visible with naked eye and estimated at mag 4.7. Can anyone identify the dust cloud visible top centre (4h 38m -14d approx)?

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel ,Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Processing in IRIS 4.18, Daylight WB + gamma 1.7 applied. 3 separate versions with different contrast levels were layered for this view. hide exif

Great shot!!
The nebulouse area may be LBN 981 (with embedded LDN 1636) which is stated in Guide as faintest object with a maximun diameter of 2 degrees. An other remark is that it possibly not exist....
Perhabs you proved its existance!!
Greetings
Waldemar
