Endemic to eastern Brazil, this species has been expanding its range in recent years and it has only recently colonised much of Rio de Janeiro state. It can now be found even in the centre of Rio de Janeiro, for instance in the grounds of the Quinta da Boa Vista, although it is still vastly outnumbered by the familiar Rufous Hornero.
