Leucopternis polionotus
Mantled Hawk is considered endemic to the Atlantic Forest, although documented records from outside of Brazil, i.e. in eastern Paraguay, northern Uruguay and north-east Argentina, are not yet available. It is currently treated as Vulnerable by BirdLife International and is generally harder to observe than its congener, White-necked Hawk, which is endemic to south-east Brazil, and which can also be found at Reserva Ecológica de Guapi Assu. Note the clear white trailing edge to the wings, which is a key field mark that can be used to separate the two species. For more details concerning the identification of these birds, see Neotropical Birding 1: 42-47, the birding magazine of the Neotropical Bird Club (visit www.neotropicalbirdclub.org for more details about Neotropical Birding and the club).
