Havana, Cuba: Where Time Stood Still

Three thumbnails; behind them you will find either portraits, street scenes or my travel journal.

These shots were all taken during a 2 week trip in July 2005, yeah, when hurricane Dennis passed through the Cuban capital. For the background story, please check out the image with the text: Salsa & Socialism (last image). Rather than an image it is actually the title page to my journal which relates to this fantastic photographic trip. The people were fabulous, the cars amazing, the architecture divine and the food... ehhh... nothing to write home about. Anyone who has been to Cuba (one the most eclectic places on earth) will recognize the events I describe. For those who plan on going: there is a fair bit of advice that does not have to be followed up but may help in planning your trip as well as what to expect once you are there. I had the trip of a life time and these snapshots presented here are only a small selection of the many happy memories that I immortalized through the use of my camera.

Thank you ever so much for your journal and these fantastic pictures. My husband and I have just returned from Havana and unfortunately failed to read this journal before we went. We should have. Your photo's are magnificent and are almost a summary of our very own trip. Not much has changed. We even met your "Graciela" who now has an agent at her side dealing with the financial matters. We did not find the pharmacy that you photographed so beautifully as apparently it was burned down a few years ago. Everything else seems as if you photographed it only yesterday. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Superb work...I am in awe. You really made the most of your 2 weeks. I spent 2 weeks in Cuba last year when Hurricane Wilma passed through so can relate to many of your stories!

I was in Havana last week and spotted "The Last Revolutionary" looking a bit tired out (http://www.pbase.com/image/59032312 ). Sadly I could not find Graciela anywhere, but I wasn't quite sure where she normally hung out. Your gallery was a big influence in my decision to visit Cuba, and I'm very glad I did! Thank you!

Fantastic portfolio: I think you've captured Havana life in all of your pictures, especially the portraits and street scenes. I'll be spending two weeks in Cuba next april, and will be more than satisfied if I return with only twenty pictures of this quality. If you ever get tired of your career in finance, you can easily become a professional photographer... One question: how did you manage to keep your girlfriend satisfied while spending all your time taking these photos?

the description of your time was extremly vivid and highly informative. i realised whilst reading about hurricane dennis that i was there in havanna at the same time as yourself staying at hotel national! you captured the images of cuba brilliantly. manythanks for brightening up my day and bringing back happy memories.

The problem with leaving comments on your galleries is that I don't know where to begin - everything is just so excellent. You have a great eye for composition, color and B&W; you find interesting subjects, both human and otherwise, and you do such a fine job of "capturing the moment". Really very exceptional work!!
