Rey Cross was originally(and can still be seen) a very large Roman temporary camp. It's worth noting that archaeological evidence has shown, that this camp was unusual,in that, unlike the usual practice of stopping for the night ,dig your outer defensive ditch, using the arisings to make your wall,at this camp, the wall was made by scraping up the soil and grass from within the camp,to make a wall.It is situated at the highest point of the Stainmore Pass.Three English counties meet here and in the middle ages people would meet here to sort out disputes.
