MuZ 500 Classic Silver Star

At home

Just found this pic in the archives.I purchased mine from Jack Nice Motorcycles in 1996,with just under 2,000 miles on the clock.I parted company with it,several years later with 105,000 miles on the clock.I changed the oil every 1,000 miles and the oil filter every 2,000 miles.Regular checks on tappets, with cam belts replaced every 20,000 miles.Drive chains greased regularly, and replaced every 50,000 miles. One down side,it ate cables.No-one could supply genuine cables,so modified cables had to be used.In my ownership,it used 8 throttle cables and 7 clutch cables.A wonderful engine. The Rotax 500cc four valve engine,in mild tune,so easy to maintain, but just a tad too powerful for the MuZ frame.85 mpg at a steady 60 mph.A spring broke in the gearbox at 105,000 miles.MZ dealers quoted 600 to repair. So I dismantled the bike myself.Sent the engine to a Rotax specialist in Devon,as he quoted 200,if I took out the engine and sent it to him.He reckoned he'd never seen such a high mileage engine, with so little wear. The repair cost a total of 500,as when it was apart,I said to replace lots of bits.I never put it back into the frame. It just sat in my shed languishing. Why? you ask.Because, someone bought me a Suzuki 600 Bandit, while the MuZ was being repaired,so sadly I never rode the Silver Star again. It was the original demo bike for MuZ(UK).The farthest single journey I ever rode on it was from London to Elgin, and back, the next day,a distance of 625 miles each way.
