Honda XBR500G reg. no. E349 MMT.

Honda XBR500G reg. no. E349 MMT.

August 1990 -August 1992,75,000 miles.Reliable hack.Uncomfortable over distance, terrible on a cold morning, but I loved this bike.I put panniers on it and the sub-frame frequently snapped. So common a feature of the bike, that one courier company, which used nothing else had the replacement subframes ready just to fit.I changed the oil every 1,000 miles and the oil filter every 2,000 miles. It got tappety by 90,000 miles on the clock(it had 20,000miles on it when I bought it),but mechanically, nothing ever went wrong, except for the front wheel bearing. It collapsed,in flight,so to speak.Thank goodness for the AA.In the days before yellow speed machines this bike took me from The Shirehall,Reading to Orsman Street,London E2,IN A CLOCKED AND VERIFIED TIME OF 59 MINUTES.On extremely cold mornings, cardboard had to be wrapped around the cylinder,or else it wouldn't warm up.Now I recall,a small electrical component, about the size of a pack of 20 cigs. failed. All the electrics were wired through it.It couldn't be by-passed. cost 86 to replace, after about 90,000 miles. Also,I took off the handlebar rubbers and replaced with pipe lagging(foam rubber) to make the bars easier to hold. This had the unfortunate habit of compressing and had to be replaced on a very regular basis.
