Clungunford Motte, known locally as "Bum (H)ill"

Clungunford,Shropshire,England,UK view map

This motte, mutilated by stone robbers,in antiquity, was, like Newcastle(upon Clun) motte, probably built to guard/police a crossing point on the nearby River Clun. There is no evidence of a bailey and room on top of the motte for only a tower. It probably served as a refuge in times of strife, but more probably as a status symbol for some lowly lord, who would have lived nearby in a hall little better than the houses his serfs lived in.
