Great Easton,the motte

Great Easton,Essex,UK view map

This motte is believed to be Adulterine, that is,it was built without Royal assent. It was ,therefore, probably built during the Anarchy. No trace of a bailey has been found.Note, the difference in ground level, between, the rhs end of motte slope and the normal ground level by the fence.Excavations have shown, that the original ditch was at least another 2 metres deeper, than the present shallow ditch.
