Hadrian's Wall:Banks east turret

Banks,Cumbria,UK. view map

Hadrian's Wall was founded on puddled clay, resulting in problems in some places, with ponding water behind the Wall. This was overcome by making drainage channels through the Wall. This is a good example. The road surface, beyond the Wall,is on what would have been, the barbarian side of the Wall.
