St.Botolph's Church,Beauchamp Roding

Beauchamp Roding,Essex view map

Known locally as "The Church in the Fields",as the village it once served has vanished over time. The Church is still used regularly.
Here's a good lineage;my son's Godfather's mother was married in this church. In the year 1998,as a despatch rider,I visited Iken,Suffolk,to deliver a package. The addressee was out but due back a couple of hours later. As I killed the time at Iken(all two houses and a church)I spent a while at the church dedicated to St.Botolph.It is claimed that the current building is on the site of Botolph's Minster on land given by the then King of East Anglia.A beautiful, tranquil site.I was so taken by it that I resolved there and then,to walk there, almost on a pilgrimage, one day.In January 2000,I began my walk.I had decided to begin from home,as Medieval pilgrimages did just that, and to pass as many churches dedicated to St.Botolph as I could, along the way.In Essex, there are just 4.That determined my route, and this little beauty was the first such church I came across.

I was born in the cottage across the fields by the church,my parents married in the church and my mother christened in the church in 1906. I have such wonderful memories for this area. Thank you for the great photos.
