Uncompromising ! (Looking East)

Sewingshields Crags , Northumberland

OK!You've just been billeted here at Milecastle 35.It's been raining cats and dogs all day and you're on Duty tonight.Look at the slope on the Parade Ground. You've somehow got to get up that slope in sandals with iron rivets on the soles.Yeah right!Such was the normality of Roman Milecastle siting. Not just here, but at MC42 it's even worse.MC 49 IT'S WORST.The Roman Army does come across as heartless. The mileometer says here,so here it is.Here,is atop a cliff. But,a gateway was built,to accommodate "traffic" passing thro' the Wall.On a cliff top?

quite a forlorn looking spot....you are bringing back memories of a book on Vindolanda that my daughter had as a proof-reading exercise and, yes the letters home often asked for socks
