Having identified the location of a motte and bailey castle, with adjacent church, yippee! We screamed sedately up country to Kilpeck, to view same. There we met part of our church officers, from Romford,Essex. How strange. They were supposed to be with the Choir, from our church in Romford, singing for a long weekend, in nearby Hereford Cathedral.Mattins at 4pm.It was now 2.30pm.They didn't stop to talk.Still, the carvings at Kilpeck Church are really worth going to see, both inside and out.The Norman motte and bailey castle, was closed to the public.Having looked at the carvings we retired to the local hostelry for lunch. It had just closed. After that we drove up to Longtown Castle, but didn't stop. Then back to Grosmont Castle, via a delightful village cafe, cream teas and coffees. You get the idea. Then as the afternoon drew to a close, the rather less attractive proposition of finding a needle in a haystack;our accommodation in the Forest of Dean.
