From Skelgill Bank 338m.It is said that confession is good for the soul,so here we go;as I crested the first serious top/shoulder on Skelgill Bank, there was a craggy patch, with a steep drop into the Newlands Valley. As a youth,I scampered over this zone, probably never giving it a second thought. As an overweight, valley floor walker,I'll admit to feeling a wee bit scared.Still,I crabbed over it and on I went.Upon seeing the fell runners who passed me,a husband and wife pairing, struggle up the craggy collar on Catbells, and thinking of my left knee,I reached the top of the reddish area ahead, just shy of the summit, and withdrew. On my descent on the Derwent Water side of Skelgill Bank,my left knee gave out and I had to spend an agonising 20 minutes or so,braving myself for the return to my car.
