Roman Signal Station on White Type hill

White Type hill,Dumfriesshire,Scotland view map

As can be seen from the image, the whole area has been deep ploughed, but a 20m. berm has been left around the site.Above the A701,just before the Devil's Beef Tub,ascending from Moffat.
Take a minute to contemplate what it must have been like to "man" this outpost.Nearest fort; Milton 8 Roman Miles away.Ok it's downhill all the way.Nearest fortlet, the other direction, about 2 Roman miles.A truly bleak location, especially so far from the nearest streetlight, with only sheep and marauding locals to chat to.LOL.Nearest pub,in Caer Luguvvalium(Carlisle to you and me)about 60 Roman miles and no night taxis.I jest of course,as Roman soldiers, even auxiliaries were murdering sob's to a man.Superstitious as hell, but kill first, ask questions later.
V.IMP.THE PICCIE HAS BEEN TAKEN LOOKING SOUTH,SO IN IMAGE THE FORTLET IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROMAN ROAD.
