Looking west across Milecastle 42.

Cawfields Crags,Northumberland,England,UK view map

I took this shot, primarily,to show how sparse the interior of the milecastle would have been. The masonry on the ground is the base of the milecastle's outer wall, but beyond,in the interior, spartan is the word.No paving, just bare rock, and on what a slope.
NB:The route of Hadrian's Wall, after the quarry,is behind the trees in mid image, where the wall runs to the upper right hand corner of the image,to the farmhouse lit by the morning sun. That is in the Roman fort of AESICA.SEE http://www.roman-britain.org/places/aesica.htm
