Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria (May 2006)

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most picturesque and historic towns in Bulgaria, located 241 kilometers northeast of Sofia. It stands in tiers above Yantra River, meandering through the elevations of Tarnovo and the three hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora. Veliko Tarnovo became the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom after its founding (1186). It became a center of medieval Bulgarian life. In 1393, Veliko Tarnovo was conquered by the Turks and burned to the ground. During the years of Ottoman rule, it epitomized the Bulgarian national spirit and became one of the centers of the struggle for liberation. In 1879, the Constituent National Assembly had its first session in Veliko Tarnovo and adopted the Constitution of Tarnovo, which was the first constitution of the Bulgarian state. Today, part of Veliko Tarnovo is a museum with three zones, which comprises the territory of the Arbanasi Village and the two main medieval fortresses on the hills of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa. Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria’s most popular and interesting tourist attractions.
