Timisoara Romania (May 2006)

Timisoara originated on the site of an ancient Roman fortress called Castrum Regium Themes, dating back to 1212. Over the next 900 years, Timisoara, the largest city in western Romania, has been influenced by many cultures including Turkish, Austrian, German and Serbian. The city lies on the northern bank of the Bega River. It is renowned for its medieval architecture, picturesque squares and vibrant cultural life. Frequently referred to as "Little Vienna," Timisoara is home to year-round musical and theatrical performances, art galleries, museums and nightlife. The city is small enough to explore on foot or by riding on the tram. Timisoara is known as the place where the Romanian Revolution began. In December 1989, mass anti-Ceausescu protests in began in Timisoara and continued in Bucharest, leading to the overthrow of Ceausescu and the Communist regime.
