Scarecrow Invasion at Lyndhurst Estate at Tarrytown, NY (Oct. 2009)

I accidentally came across the “Scarecrow Invasion” when I visited the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, NY. I was overwhelmed by scarecrows covering the lawn as I entered the estate. They were so creative and irresistible, that I had to take pictures! The “Scarecrow Invasion” is an annual event that has occurs every fall, in time for Halloween. 1st grade through 8th grade students create scarecrows on the lawn of the Lyndhurst Estate, a National Trust Historic Site. They also get educational tours of Lyndhurst. The first year it started in 2005, only one school participated, creating 100 scarecrows. This year in 2009, seven schools participated, creating almost 700 scarecrows. The theme this year was to create scarecrows that look like famous artists and historical figures, among them, Queen Elizabeth and Julia Child, as well as monsters, clowns and more. The clothes used for the scarecrows are donated to homeless people after the invasion is over. The “Scarecrow Invasion” brought out the kid in me again! I highly recommend this unique event to everyone else.
