Luang Prabang, Laos - Hill Tribe Village (December 2010)
More than 100 years ago, Hill Tribe people from China migrated to Laos, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam. They are mainly farmers and are known to migrate if growing conditions are not good. There are many different tribes of Hill Tribe people with different languages, customs, culture and way of dressing. The Hill Tribe people near Luang Prabang are known for their colorful, decorative and beautiful clothing, especially among the children. The Lao Hill Tribe People live half in the past and in the present, rooted in their customs while carrying cell phones. Their presence makes Laos a much more interesting and diverse place.

On the way back to Luang Prabang, we visited a Hill Tribe Village.
The main profession of these tribes is farming. They are not so backward as you can see from the cell phone!
Over 100 years ago, the Hill Tribe peoples migrated south from China into what are now Burma, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.
They tend to migrate whenever they feel that the soil at their present location is becoming depleted.
The children dress in beautiful colored and decorative clothing with beads and hats.
