Ljubljana, Slovenia (April 2003)

Ljubljana has always been Slovenian, despite the fact that Slovenia has only been independent since 1991. The influence of the old Yugoslavia in Ljubljana is still quite strong, especially when it comes to it’s food and music. Many Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians stayed after the break-up of Yugoslavia, giving Ljubljana it's current Yugoslav flavor. Ljubljana is a very youthful city since one tenth of the city's population are students. Old meets new in Ljubljana with a blend of Medieval, Baroque, Renaissance and art nouveau architecture in the city’s Old Town center. There are also many charming squares and picturesque embankments and bridges along the Ljubljanica River. The overall atmosphere is that of a small town with charm and character.
