Dubrovnik, Croatia (April 2003)

Dubrovnik is known as the "jewel of the Adriatic." It is located in the south of Croatia between the Adriatic and Dinaric Alps. The 13th century Old Town remains virtually unchanged today. Dubrovnik is surrounded by tall ramparts and has only 2 entrances to the pedestrian-only Old Town leading to the Stradun, the city's promenade. A wealth of historic sites lie within the ancient city walls. Despite a tumultuous history, Dubrovnik has retained its medieval charms and beauty. The city suffered much damage and approximately 114 civilian deaths during the JNA attack and siege that lasted for 7 months between 1991-1992. The attacking regime in Montenegro was installed and loyal to the Serbian government of Slobodan Milosevic. In May 1992, the Croatian Army liberated Dubrovnik, although danger of further attacks lasted for another 3 years. Adhering to UNESCO guidelines, the damage to the Old Town has been repaired. While a few bullet holes can still be seen today, visitors are again flocking to Dubrovnik because it’s medieval charms and dazzling beauty are irresistible.
