Cork, Ireland (November 2013)

Cork is Ireland's third-largest city. It started out as an island, but no more since this hilly southern seaport now spans both banks of the River Lee. The best way to experience Cork is on foot, walking past St. Finn Barre's Cathedral and the riverside quadrangle of University College up the hill to red and white Shandon Church and, then, along the cramped 17th-century alleyways, quaint, colorful houses and the opera house. Cork is also known for its great restaurants. Cork has a reputation as "the rebel city," which originated by its support for the Yorkist cause during the English War of the Roses in the 15th century. Cork residents refer to the city as "the real capital" due to the city's role as the center of anti-treaty forces during the Irish Civil War.
