Brasov, Romania (May 2006)

Brasov was founded in 1211 by Teutonic Knights and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels. Due to its medieval flavor, Brasov is one of Romania’s most popular tourist destinations with its gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture. It is located the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains at the intersection of trade route that linked the Ottoman Empire with western Europe. Old Town Hall Square is a central point of Brasov with its colorful and ornate, baroque buildings. Brasov’s Black Church is the largest gothic church in Romania. Its name comes from damage caused by the Great Fire of 1689, when flames and smoke blackened its walls. The Black Church can boast having one of the largest organs in Eastern Europe. A trip to Romania would be incomplete without enjoying the timeless medieval beauty of Brasov.
