I originally misidentified this bird as a black-crowned night -heron. It's distinguished from the black-crowned by longer neck & legs, all dark & thicker bill, narrow & distinct streaks on underparts, tiny white spots & thin white edges on wing coverts.
First one I'd ever seen, at a location where I often see BCNH.
