The Red Cedar - gateway to Ocracoke -over 130 years old

Near the lighthouse on the Island

We talked, the tree and I about long ago things and about the way things are today.
His name is called Red Cedar and was there in place over 130 years ago he shared.
There is a picture of me made in the year 1890, and I have met many seafarers, heard their stories. I was here long before the lighthouse and long before the days of Capt Teach aka as Blackbeard.
I do not like being fenced in as I am today. I would like to feel the touch of the many visitors who come by each day. As you have today.
I am forever new, evolving, a gift to all from my Creator God.

I feel the tree has been here a long time,
long before the pirates made Ocracoke their home,
long before Edward Teache , or Blackbeard as he was known, terrorized the island
long before the Indian tribe known as Wocokon were inhabiting the Island
and gave the Island its name.
Maps of 1680 show the Island and there among the water oaks,
the marsh grass, yaupon, and deep sand dunes,
I believe my tree found life.
I passed the tree twice before I hear its voice calling me.
The others went on as I found my feet rooted in front of the tree.
I wanted first to touch this living child of nature, but an iron fence prevented
my getting any nearer. I reached out my arms only to be short several feet.
So I began my conversation, in great awe of the tree and tuning out the rivalry of the passers by.
You are magnificent in structure, intricately intertwined, gracious in openness, beautiful in years!
Words of true wonder fell from my lips and I felt I was in a cathedral of honor.
I looked for a gate I could open to get closer and touch this living monument of creation.
there was a gate, but the caretaker was not permitted to unlock it.
My mind raced as I tried to vision the tree in Spring time dress, in the heat of the Island's summer time and
also in the coldest of times. My visit today was in the Fall and the green leaves were in evidence
of a still warm sun. I visioned the artistry of frost, and if the tree had ever been covered in snow....
I must return soon, I will plea with the caretaker to let me touch the tree with finger of respect and love.
Ever so softly, ever so respectfully, ever so grateful to our Creator God.
