Leaving the Carpathian mountains and heading towards Alba Iulia, in Transylvania, we drove through beautiful countryside. Our hotel, the Medieval Hotel, was converted from a military garrison and is a stunningly lovely property. We spent some time at the Alba Iulia Jewish cemetery, too, as Michael's mother's family was from that area. In Transylvania, there are folks who speak Hungarian and German, in addition to Romanian. Those communities and the whole area were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
